Fire Alarm Systems

Analogue Addressable

Analogue Addressable systems provide the optimum cover for any site.

Each device can be programmed and has its own identity, so activation can be pin-pointed to an exact location, intelligent cause and effect programming can be set and phased evacuation

Two-wire Systems

Two-wire fire alarm systems were first installed in 1982, they are ideal systems to reduce installation costs and time.

The detectors, call points and fire alarm sounders are installed on the same circuits together

Conventional Alarms

Conventional fire alarm systems have one detection circuit per zone together with at least two sounder circuits as standard.

Conventional systems are cost efficient and easy to install also meeting BS5839-1:2017 standards in full depending on the design.

Wireless Systems

Wireless systems are ideal where cabling is not practical such as historical buildings and extensions to annex buildings.

Wireless systems are easy to expand and as they rely on batteries there’s no wiring costs.

What Laws Regulate the requirements for your Fire Alarm System?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) is the overarching legislation covering fire
safety which came into force in 2006 and is a mandatory requirement.

To comply with the RRO, your premises, facilities &; life Safety Equipment must be regularly
maintained by a qualified person, the guidance set out in the British Standard BS 5839-1: 2017
states that fire alarm detection systems should be inspected by a qualified person at least twice a
year, with weekly alarm tests completed and recorded every week by an internally appointed
individual.

How often should fire alarms be tested?

Fire alarms should be tested weekly by a competent person, these tests are critically important to ensure that your system is fully operational and ensure that everyone in your premises know how
they sound.

It is essential that that the test is recorded in your fire alarm log-book to show your audit trail which will demonstrate that you are on top of your legal duties when visited by a Local Authority.

Typical weekly Fire Alarm Tests Procedure:

Alert all occupants of the Building of a Test situation, we would recommend that the test is carried
out at the same time each week then all occupants are of the test time (Less Confusion in an
Emergency.

Activate a Fire Alarm Call Point anywhere in the premises and walk back to the Fire Alarm Panel listening to the Fire Alarm sounders (The only part of the system that can not be monitored is the sound of the alarms).

Any faults found and what action was taken to repair them.

The date, time, zone and location of the test should be entered into the Logbook.

Any evacuation drills that are completed utilising your alarm system.

Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lights play a vital role in supporting proactive evacuation procedures, guiding people
to the nearest exit or safe route in the event of an emergency, they will however only help to protect
your premises if they are functioning correctly.

Why is Emergency Lighting Testing important?
In the event of an emergency, like a fire, smoke or a power failure, emergency lights and exit signs
play a critical part in supporting safe and effective evacuation procedures. Reliable and effective
lighting should come on as soon as it is needed, guiding people clearly to their nearest emergency
exit. The emergency lighting should stay on throughout the emergency, maintaining the quality of
its brightness.

That is why it is a legal requirement to have appropriate emergency lighting installed, the BS 5266-
1:2016 standards state that emergency lighting should be tested at least every month to meet your
legal obligations.

In addition to these monthly inspections, a more comprehensive annual inspection must legally also
be carried out by a competent person with the necessary experience, training and qualifications.

This is where Calendar Fire can help, fully trained engineers carry out the necessary inspection and
maintenance of your emergency lighting systems, providing you with the peace of mind that you
are legally compliant.
